According to the World Health Organization (WHO) there are at least 140
million alcoholics in the world, and the majority of them are not
treated.
People with a stable psychosocial life situation often delay in seeking help for their alcohol problems even though they are serious. The principal factors that appear to delay people from seeking attention is precisely that that they have a stable psychosocial life situation and experience themselves as being mentally healthy.
Alcoholism is a disease that not only affects you physically and mentally but also your near and dear ones in numerous ways and can lead to psychological and physical trauma.
Thus the first step for the alcoholic to get out of this trap of alcoholism is to acknowledge that there is an alcohol dependency problem. The next step is to get help.
Help can be in the form of medical help ,Interventions or counseling but It is a known fact that opening up about your problem to people who are suffering from the same can be a major healer. The major goal of this is that sharing your experience, strength and hope with each other may solve your common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. Group Therapy can also help people to deal with underlying psychological issues that are related to alcohol addiction, as well as provide relapse prevention skills.

I'm am now coming to grips with the fact I am alcoholic.
ReplyDeleteMy girlfriend too, has a problem. She thinks she can get it under control herself. I do not want to break up with her, but I feel like if we stay together, I'm going to kill myself with the drink.
I do so want to stop using, but it's really difficult, especially when I get anxious.
Any advise would be appreciated.
I believe alcoholism is part genes and part environment, part social, part biological.
ReplyDeleteMy dad was alcoholic and so was his father. I, therefore inherited/learned to be alcoholic and did not learn how to express myself clearly and confidently without alcohol.
If it's appropriate I would suggest to you that you move away from your immediate environment for a time: to allow yourself the opportunity to develop emotionally within a secure atmosphere that is not alcohol dependent. This does not mean you don't love your family. It means you are looking after yourself.
